Allegan County Medical Care Community bases its care on the Eden Alternative, a philosophy of geriatric care based around the idea that aging should not be a stage of decline, but a continued stage of growth and development. The philosophy emphasizes not only the physical needs of the person, but also the care for their mental and emotional well-being.
Each staff member at ACMCC is trained in the Eden Alternative and works to create an atmosphere that brings meaning to each patient’s life. By providing residents with a variety of spontaneous activities, the ACMCC staff helps eliminate loneliness, helplessness and boredom prevalent in many care facilities across the nation.
The Eden Alternative believes an enlivened environment succeeds where pills and therapy do not. This includes surrounding residents with plants, animals and frequent visits from children, as well as developing meaningful staff/resident relationships.
The Eden Alternative is changing the culture of long-term care from institutionalized and task-oriented support to interactive and meaningful care.
The Eden Alternative is a small not-for-profit organization founded in 1991 by Dr. William Thomas, a Harvard-educated physician and board-certified geriatrician. The Eden Alternative has trained more than 15,000 Eden Associates and is the adopted philosophy of more than 300 registered homes in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia.
